Founded in 2008 by the French Junior Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) is an NGO offering baking/pastry-making courses to disadvantaged young Chinese.
This professional insertion program targets disadvantaged young people from rural settings, teaching them to make French and Chinese pastries. The goal is to allow them to find jobs in the bakery-pastry making sector. Four hotels of the Group in Shanghai (Grand Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao, Sofitel Hyland Shanghai, Pullman Skyway Shanghai et Pullman South) are involved in this project.
Solidarity AccorHotels has given this training programme its backing since 2013, benefiting around 200 young people.
In 2018, the Endowment Fund reiterated its support for 32 new young people and at the same time supported the development of income-generating activities (sales of pastries, short training workshops...) to reach self-financing of the SYB program. Solidarity AccorHotels is therefore participating in the financing of the renovation of the training center, the Baking Center, to adapt to these new activities: creation of new spaces, reorganization, purchase of new equipment, hygiene rules, etc.
Joining SYB changed my life; it broadened my horizons and taught me the skills to become independent. I have also improved my communication and interpersonal skills a lot.
